1) Overview of Second Trimester Panel (Basic)

The second trimester of pregnancy is considered the most beautiful period of the mother’s term. At this time, she should no longer have the morning sickness or discomfort experienced in the first 3 months of pregnancy, however, she may still face abnormalities such as abdominal pain, fatigue, blurred vision, and reduced urination.

During this time, the fetus develops more strength and begins to respond to and feel the sounds from the mother’s environment.

Second Trimester Panel (Basic) provides 4 essential 2nd-trimester tests, helping mothers understand and monitor the health of the fetus and themselves and detect any abnormalities allowing timely treatment.

2. Which Tests are part of the Second Trimester Test Panel (Basic)?

This test panel deploys 4 tests necessary for the second trimester, including:

– Complete blood count (CBC) test: This is the core blood test that the mother needs to undergo. The doctor uses a blood sample to check for anemia and determine if Rh+ or Rh- to detect any incompatibility in the mother-infant agreement and provide an overall health assessment.

– Triple test: After having a double test at stage 1, the mother will perform a triple test at stage 2 to determine the risk of neural tube defects in the fetus; these are defects in the fetus, where the child’s brain and spine will not develop normally.

– Urinalysis: Urinalysis results help doctors detect kidney diseases and urinary tract infections (burning sensation while urinating or blood in urine), so they can take measures and provide timely treatment.

– Glucose tolerance test: During pregnancy, a mother needs to produce 3 times more insulin than usual to stabilize blood sugar (glucose) levels. If the insulin is insufficient, the sugar levels cause clogging, leading to diabetes.

Mothers need to perform a gestational diabetes test to protect their health and ensure that the baby is born without hypoglycemia, which poses risks of coma and brain damage.

In the second trimester of pregnancy, the mother will take a glucose tolerance test with a different sampling method than a normal fasting blood sugar test (taking a blood sample after fasting for at least 8 hours). The mother will give 3 blood draws, with the first drawn after a minimum of 08 hours of fasting. After 1 hour, the mother will drink 75g of sugar water before drawing blood for the second time. The mother continues to rest before drawing blood for the 3rd time (also the last time) 2 hours after the 2nd time.
