Men and women planning to get married.

TEST'S PURPOSE

- Screening for thalassemia, a common inherited disorder, is crucial as it can be managed but not cured.

(1) Vietnam has 12 million carriers of the thalassemia gene, with 8,000 affected children born annually. Among them, 2,000 severe cases require lifelong management.

(2) Thalassemia alpha carriers: 1/22 (1 in 22 people carry the gene).

(3) Thalassemia beta carriers: 1/32 (1 in 32 people carry the gene).
