. SCC (Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen) is a protein primarily produced by squamous epithelial cells, especially in the cervix and lung.
. While SCC is not a standalone screening test for squamous cell carcinoma, it can aid in identifying individuals with symptoms or at high risk for squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix, lung, esophagus, head and neck, anal canal, skin, or other sites, when used alongside other tests and imaging e.g., ultrasound or CT scans. It may also be elevated in non-cancerous conditions like chronic inflammation, infection, or benign lung diseases.
. In cancers, this tumor marker is used as an aid in monitoring the recurrence/progression and in assessing the response to therapy.
Note: SCC levels can vary between different manufacturers due to differences in assay methods and reagent specificity. Results obtained from different manufacturers cannot be used interchangeably.
