ACTH is a pituitary gland hormone that controls cortisol production. Cortisol, an adrenal gland hormone helps you respond to stress, fight infection, and regulate blood sugar and blood pressure. The test is often done with a cortisol test to diagnose pituitary or adrenal gland disorders.

Patient Instructions:
. You are advised to fast overnight before testing.
. Arrange to get your sample collected early in the morning (6:00 am-8:00 am).
. Avoid strenuous physical activity on the day before the scheduled test.
. Because stress can raise your cortisol levels, it is recommended to rest before your test.
. You will need to stop dietary supplements containing biotin (Vitamin B7), commonly found in hair, skin, and nail supplements, and multivitamins, at least 8 hours before sample collection. However, it is highly recommended that patients taking massive biotin doses stop for 72 hours.
. Certain medications can influence ACTH levels. It is essential to inform your doctor about any medications you are currently taking, including corticosteroids, birth control pills, and other hormone treatments. You may be advised to temporarily stop certain medications before the test. Do not stop any medication without consulting your doctor first.
