More than half of all cases of cervical cancer result in mortality

Cervical cancer is a malignant disease that occurs when the epithelial cells (cells on the surface) of the cervix grow abnormally, leading to the formation of tumors in the cervix. These tumors multiply uncontrollably, invading and migrating to other organs in the body, most commonly spreading to the lungs, liver, bladder, vagina, and rectum.

According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), cervical cancer is one of the most diagnosed types of cancer in women, specifically for the following reasons:

– It was estimated that 604,000 new cases and 342,000 women died globally in 2020. Low and middle-income countries account for 90% of all new cases and deaths.

– In Vietnam alone, it is estimated that for every 100,000 women, there will be 20 cases of cervical cancer, with the number of deaths up to 11 cases (according to a report from the Ministry of Health).

4 cervical cancer risk factors from daily life:

– Human Papilloma Virus (HPV): Although the science behind how cervical cancer develops is still being studied, HPV is the leading cause of this disease. To date, scientists have found that there are more than 200 types of HPV that can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, usually through sexual contact (including oral sex). In the absence of tumor formation, HPV can still cause warts or genital warts.

– HIV infection (the virus that causes AIDS): When the body is infected with this virus, the body’s immune system is weakened, increasing the risk of HPV infection and leading to cancer formation.

– Long-term use of oral contraceptives (5 years or more) or have given birth to 3 or more children.

– Poor sexual health safety, being involved in relationships with many different partners.

It’s estimated that 80% of women are infected with at least 01 Type of HPV

Cervical cancer is often caused by an infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted virus. Therefore, sexually active women are at a higher risk of developing cervical cancer, with those over 30 years old even more at risk.
