1. 2nd Trimester Panel (Advanced) – Overview

The second trimester of pregnancy is considered the most beautiful period of your pregnancy term. You should experience less morning sickness or discomfort during this time compared to the first 3 months of pregnancy. However, you may still face abnormalities such as abdominal pain, fatigue, blurred vision, or difficulty urinating.

At this time, the fetus also has a period of strong development, with increased reactions and the ability to feel sounds.

The 2nd Trimester Panel (Advanced) provides 4 essential tests in the second trimester for mothers to understand and monitor the health of the fetus and themselves, detecting any abnormalities that may occur to receive timely treatment.

2. Which Tests are included in the 2nd Trimester Panel?

The panel deploys 4 tests necessary for the second trimester, including:

– Complete blood count (CBC) test: This is the core test that the mother needs to perform. It will help the doctor check for anemia and determine if Rh+ or Rh- to detect any incompatibility in the mother-infant agreement and provide an overall health assessment.

– Triple test: Following the double test at stage 1, the mother will undergo the triple test at stage 2 to determine the risk of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, or Patau syndrome.

– Urinalysis: Urinalysis results help doctors detect kidney diseases and urinary tract infections (burning sensations while urinating or blood in urine), allowing timely treatment.

Glucose tolerance test: During pregnancy, a mother must produce 3 times more insulin than usual to stabilize blood sugar (glucose) levels. If there is not enough insulin, it can lead to diabetes. Mothers need to perform a gestational diabetes test to protect their health and ensure that the baby is born without hypoglycemia, as this can cause brain damage or coma.

In the second trimester of pregnancy, the mother will perform a glucose tolerance test with a different sampling method than a normal fasting blood sugar test (a blood sample is taken after a minimum of 08 hours of fasting). The mother will have 3 blood draws, with the first drawn after a minimum of 08 hours of fasting. After 1 hour, the mother will drink 75g of sugar water and then proceeds with the second blood draw. After more rest, the 3rd time (also the last time) comes 2 hours after the 2nd collection.

– Ferritin test | Serum iron: Checks for anemia and iron deficiency in the mother – a possible cause of being weak, pale, tired, and having insufficient oxygen for herself and the baby.

– Folic acid test | vitamin B12: Deficiency of folic acid and vitamin B12 leads to neural tube defects in fetuses and children with cleft palate or spina bifida. Tests help to diagnose and treat the disease at an early stage.
