Urine Chemistry & Urine Sediment

. The Urinalysis Test is a routine examination of urine used to evaluate a wide range of conditions, including urinary tract infections, kidney disorders, diabetes, and more.
. This test is a valuable tool for assessing overall health, detecting abnormalities, and guiding treatment decisions. It examines various aspects of urine, such as appearance, concentration, and composition.
. Specific components analyzed during the test include proteins, glucose, ketones, hemoglobin, bilirubin, urobilinogen, and markers of infection. Additionally, the test measures pH levels and urine concentration (specific gravity), providing insights into hydration status and kidney function.
. The Urine Sediment Test is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the solid particles (sediment) found in urine, which can provide valuable insights into kidney function and urinary tract health.
. This test is often performed to identify the presence of abnormal cells, crystals, bacteria, casts, or other substances that may indicate conditions such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease, or bladder disorders.
. By analyzing the sediment, healthcare providers can detect abnormalities that are not visible in routine urine chemistry tests, helping guide further diagnosis and treatment.

Patient Instructions:
. The First-morning Urine Sample is preferred for the highest concentration of the sediment elements, if not possible, ensure the urine is collected after holding it in the bladder for at least 2–3 hours.
. Collect a Clean Catch Midstream urine sample using the following steps:
1. Wash your hands with soap and water.
2. Clean the genital area.
3. Start urinating into the toilet, pause, then move the collection container into the urine stream without touching the inside of the container.
4. Once the appropriate amount is collected, move the container out of the urine stream, tightly close it, and you can finish urinating in the toilet.
. Deliver the sample to the lab immediately after collection.
If delayed, store the sample in a cool place or refrigerate it (up to 2 hours) until submission.
. For women: Avoid urine collection during menstruation to prevent contamination with blood.
. Avoid foods that may alter urine color (e.g., beets or carrots and stop certain medications (e.g., vitamin C supplements, diuretics), for 24-48 hours before collection, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
