. ProGRP (Pro-gastrin-releasing peptide) is a precursor protein produced primarily in neuroendocrine cells, especially in the lungs.
. While ProGRP is not a standalone screening test for lung cancer, it can aid in identifying individuals at high risk or those with symptoms that might indicate small cell lung cancer (SCLC), when used alongside other tests and imaging e.g., ultrasound or CT scans. ProGRP is useful for the differential diagnosis of lung masses as small cell carcinoma vs. non-small cell carcinoma. It may also be elevated in other neuroendocrine tumors e.g., carcinoids, medullary thyroid carcinoma, and certain non-cancerous conditions like chronic obstructive lung disease.
. In cancers, this tumor marker is used as an aid in monitoring the recurrence/progression and in assessing the response to therapy.
Note: ProGRP levels can vary between different manufacturers due to differences in assay methods and reagent specificity. Results obtained from different manufacturers cannot be used interchangeably.
