The Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE) test is primarily used for diagnosing and monitoring neuroendocrine cancers, assessing neurological damage—especially in conditions such as small cell lung cancer, brain injury, and stroke—as well as tracking disease progression and treatment effectiveness in neurological disorders

Patient Instructions:
**Note for nurses:**
1. Centrifugation is required within 1 hour after blood collection. NSE in erythrocytes and platelets leads to elevated results in hemolyzed or incorrectly centrifuged samples (e.g. extended standing time prior to centrifugation).
2. Specimen after centrifugation can be stored at 20-25°C for 2 days, at 2-8°C for 5 days, frozen at a temperature below -70°C (deep freeze), and then stored at -20°C (±5°C) for 3 months.
