Homocysteine

. Homocysteine is an amino acid in the blood that is produced during the metabolism of methionine, an essential amino acid from dietary protein.
. Elevated levels of homocysteine can be a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including coronary artery disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. It is often ordered for individuals with a family history of heart disease, vascular diseases, or those exhibiting risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
