The MTB identification and Rifampicin (RIF) resistance test on the GeneXpert system is a molecular test that detects specific DNA sequences of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) in sputum, CSF, and Bodily fluids, and supports the detection of mutations associated with RIF resistance (gene rpoB).
This method enables early diagnosis of TB disease, especially in cases where smear results are negative, or patients who have not yet received treatment or have only taken TB medications for a short time, when smear tests are often inconsistent with clinical signs and other laboratory findings.
The Xpert MTB/RIF test improves accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, particularly in smear-negative cases, allowing rapid detection of MTB in patients with symptoms, helping reduce disease transmission, manage patients effectively, and reduce costs by detecting MTB and RIF resistance in a single test on the same sample.
