Frequently Asked Questions

ModAsian FINDRISC, or the ModAsian Finnish Diabetes Risk Score, is a screening tool used to assess the 10-year risk of developing type 2 diabetes among Asian adults.

The ModAsian FINDRISC scale has been validated in large-scale community-based studies conducted in Malaysia in 2020 and in Vietnam in 2023.

The findings showed that key risk factors, including BMI, waist circumference, family history of diabetes mellitus, history of antihypertensive medication use, demonstrated good discriminatory ability in identifying diabetes risk.

These studies evaluated the tool and concluded that ModAsian FINDRISC is an appropriate screening instrument for assessing type 2 diabetes risk among the Vietnamese population.

This tool is not intended for the following individuals:

  • People who have already been diagnosed with diabetes.
  • People with obvious symptoms of diabetes: excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, etc.
  • People who are currently experiencing an acute illness.
  • People with specific medical conditions that may affect glucose metabolism.
  • Pregnant women or individuals with suspected gestational diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic medical condition that occurs when the body is unable to use insulin effectively (insulin resistance) and can no longer produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood glucose levels. As a result, blood glucose rises above the safe range.

The disease often progresses silently over many years and may not cause obvious symptoms in its early stages. However, persistently elevated blood glucose can impair the body’s energy metabolism and lead to multiple life-threatening complications without being aware of them.

One of the serious complications of type 2 diabetes is kidney failure. This complication occurs when high blood glucose causes the kidneys to work harder and gradually become damaged. Over time, kidney filtration function declines, leading to the accumulation of waste products and fluid in the body.

Type 2 diabetes often progresses silently, but there are several characteristic warning signs that you should be aware of:

  • Excessive thirst.
  • Frequent urination.
  • Unexplained weight loss and may accompany by increased appetite than usual.

The appropriate time to undergo diabetes testing depends on your estimated risk of developing the condition within the next 10 years.

  • Low risk: You should undergo diabetes testing to monitor your health and detect early signs of the disease.
  • High risk: You should undergo diabetes testing to determine whether you have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, allowing for an appropriate medical evaluation and follow-up plan.

You should fast for at least 8 hours before sample collection. If your testing package also includes lipid profile or cardiovascular markers, you should fast for at least 12 hours.
